Why some YouTube videos have no transcript, and what to do
Most YouTube videos have captions, but not all of them. When you collect a playlist or channel, a few videos may end up in the "failed" list. This guide explains the usual reasons and what you can do about each.
Where transcripts come from
A YouTube transcript is simply the video's captions shown as text. Captions come from two places:
- Creator captions, uploaded or edited by the channel. These are usually accurate and punctuated.
- Automatic captions, generated by YouTube's speech recognition for supported languages. These are available on a large share of videos but contain more mistakes.
If neither exists, there is no transcript to read. No tool can read captions that YouTube does not have.
Common reasons and what to do
| Message in the results | Likely reason | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| No transcript available | The creator uploaded no captions and YouTube did not create automatic ones (unsupported language, music only, unclear audio, or the video is very new) | For a new upload, try again in a day or two. Otherwise there is no text to collect. |
| Sign-in required (age or private) | The video is private, members-only, or age-restricted | These cannot be collected. Use the transcript panel on YouTube while signed in, if you have access. |
| Not playable (region etc.) | The video is blocked in your country or unavailable on the web | Nothing to fix on your side. |
| Deleted or missing video | The video was removed, or the link is wrong | Check the link. Removed videos stay in some playlists as "unavailable". |
| YouTube did not provide captions (collector window hidden or minimized) | The small collector window was minimized or covered | Keep the window visible in a corner and collect again (see below). |
| Could not read the transcript / Temporary error | A network hiccup or a slow page | Collect again (see below). |
How to retry failed videos
For a playlist or channel job, go to Past jobs and press Get new videos. Videos that were collected successfully are skipped, and the ones that failed are tried again. For single videos you pasted directly, simply paste those links again and press Start.
Live streams and Shorts
Live streams usually get captions only after the stream ends and is processed, so a stream that just finished may have none yet. When you paste a channel link, TranscriptBinder reads the channel's Videos tab and skips the Shorts and Live tabs. If you need those, paste their individual links.
"I'm not a robot" checks
If YouTube asks to confirm you are a person, the job pauses. Press Show window, complete the check, then press Continue. If this happens often, take a break of 30–60 minutes. The daily limit of 50 videos exists to keep these checks rare.
Wrong language?
With Auto, TranscriptBinder picks the video's original language. Sometimes a channel uploads captions in a different language than the one spoken, or a video mixes languages. If the result looks wrong, choose the language yourself in the dashboard and collect that video again (directly pasted videos are always collected fresh).
Still stuck?
Open the Activity log under the progress bar to see each step. If a video plays and shows captions on YouTube but still fails here, write to [email protected] with the video link and the message you saw.
